Artist Statement

As a book artist and calligrapher, I am captivated by the power and mystery of words, and by the textures and images they invoke. In my work, letterforms can become extended reflections of a text. Their quality of line, weight, spacing, and placement; all of these blend to create an expressive visual language. Exploring the interaction of form, colour, and content is a welcome task, and it is when I move out of the familiar that I experience the most joy in my work. I like the fascinating ambiguity about a text or meaning which may remain veiled, just beyond complete understanding. The sacredness of the Word is never more alive than when art and Word combine.

I have been a calligrapher and lettering artist since 1988, I am recognized for experimental alphabet design and innovative one-of-a-kind artist books and creative bookbinding. I have travelled throughout the UK  lecturing and teaching a variety of calligraphic and book arts workshops. My work has appeared in regional and national exhibitions. My commercial lettering is created in my studio in Northallerton, North Yorkshire. Current interests include my continuing exploration into the creative life and mixed-media work
